The City Belt line of the Baton Rouge street railway system
opened in 1893 and operated until 1936 when it was replaced by buses.
Prior to this, in 1890, a mule-powered car alone operated in the city.
Electrification came in 1893. The railway lines in Baton Rouge changed
ownership thourghout their history. In 1898, a disatrous fire leveled the car
barns and destroyed all rolling stock. In 1900, ownership changed again and
seven years later the railway received an upgrade with new cars and new
trackwork.
This drawing shows a 1906 No.3 Dupont truck behind motorman
William Monroe Lewis. The St Louis Car Co product (N 46) was a semi-convertible
car with a Dupont No 3 truck. This car was one of six single truck 8-window
close and vestibuled cars with monitor decks ordered in 1906 and delivered in
1907. Although new car barns were built in 1925, by 1933, buses began replacing
cars until all were replaced by 1936.
