Round barns were common in states like Wisconsin, Iowa, and
Illinois where many still stand. This clay tile and frame barn located south of
Lincoln, Neraska, was begun in 1922 and took two years to complete. Only four
others still stand in Nebraska.
A dwindling testament to the
craftsmanship of the Pennsylvanian Dutch, this barn measures 90 feet in
diameter and is 60 feet tall. The barn has an interior silo in the center for
storing grain, livestock stalls on the lower level, a milking parlor, and hay
storage in the loft with equipment stored on the second level and accessed from
the front of the barn which is built alongside a hill. Hay in the loft was fed
to livestock on the bottom level through trapdoors in the floor.
The
grandson of the builder still farms the land and uses the barn to house hogs
and store equipment. It has been placed on the National Register of Historic
Places.
