Cool water of a mountain stream cascades past the long unused
grist mill nestled in piney woods. When farmers brought in their harvest for
milling, the miller kept a portion of the grain as his payment.
Grist
mills were powered by one of two sources: water or animal (mule, horse, or
oxen). Where rivers turn into rapids, the water turns huge water wheels to
grind grain.
